Phoenix Operating, launched in 2023 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Phoenix Energy, is driving record-breaking results as the company’s dedicated operating arm for domestic oil and gas development in the Williston, Powder River, and DJ Basins.
Williston Basin
Phoenix Operating’s drilling activity covers the Williston Basin in North Dakota and Montana. In North Dakota that means Williams, Divide, Mountrail, McKenzie and Dunn Counties, and in Montana it means Roosevelt County. We use 3- and 4-mile Bakken laterals to make operations more efficient and reduce surface disturbance.
Our Drilling Program launched in September 2023 in Williams and Divide Counties, North Dakota, and has since expanded into Montana.
DJ Basin &
Powder River
Looking ahead, Phoenix Operating is preparing to develop acreage in Laramie County and Converse County, Wyoming. Drilling operations in these areas are anticipated to commence in the near future, with regular updates on progress provided as they become available.
By conducting efficient SIMOPS, you effectively are lowering your cost per barrel. The better you do SIMOPS, the cheaper it is for you to get oil out of the ground.

Pads Built to Do More at Once
Phoenix Operating designs its drilling pads to support simultaneous operations, or SIMOPS. Our pads are built large enough that drilling, completion and facility construction work can run concurrently on the same location, rather than each phase waiting for the last to finish.
The Williston Basin’s multiple productive rock layers, stacked at different depths, are a factor in how we evaluate acreage and lay out each pad. Running these operations side by side is designed to help keep our costs per barrel down.
Drilling
Rigs drill new wells on the pad while other crews keep working nearby.
Completions
Frac crews complete wells that have already been drilled on the same pad.
Facility Construction
Pad and production facilities are built out in parallel, so wells are ready to come online.
